My Friend Bernie

Bernie ran the Milstead Street Elim Church Children's Outreach work. I must have been above 7 or 8 when I first started going to the Sunday School and children's meetings. Bernie held a Children's Crusade in the late 1950's when I was 12 years old. I became a Christian under his ministry. My life was changed forever. I joined the Gospel Rhythm Group when I was about 16 years old. This was a singing group based at the Clapham Elim Central Church. Bernie ran the outreach here for a number of years, and introduced the Milstead group to the Clapham Church which was a main church and a lot bigger, with a good group of young people. He realised that the group at Milstead Street would drift away unless we joined with the bigger more active group at Clapham church. I met my future husband when I was 18 and we married a little later in the Clapham Elim Church. Bernie and Joy's son Mark was our ring bearer when he was only about 3 or 4. Throughout our courtship Bernie was always there to explain the Bible in the simplest of terms, and Joy was always there with a cup of tea. They were like a big brother and sister to us as a couple. We love them dearly. Now Bernie has gone to be with our Lord, Joy is our lovely sister in the Lord.
